While there are many programs and files that happen to take advantage of this extension, the most commonly used type of file which uses .srt as its identifying suffix is the subtitle file. Most people have seen a foreign film or television show at one time or another, and chances are that it had subtitles. Since the advent of DVDs there has existed an option in many digital video formats to manually turn subtitles on or off for the film being watched. Video on personal computers as well has come to take advantage of this, and in fact anyone with a bit of knowledge can write their own subtitles, provided they can translate. This has allowed for translations into the languages of small countries considered too obscure by the DVD producing companies.

I really do love FileCure because it's so easy to use - you don't have to be some kind of computer guru to get just what you need!

Plug and play? Not even close. I spent a lot of time trying to get my new, so-called 'plug and play' scanner to work. I was about ready to take it back. ParetoLogic FileCure got it working and saved me a needless trip (and gas!!) back to the store.

I have to admit I'm no computer geek. When something goes wrong, I usually have to call someone to fix it and it costs me a lot of money. When my printer wouldn't work, a friend of mine suggested I try ParetoLogic FileCure a try. I figured it was worth a shot because I was going to have to pay for a geek anyway. I was so happy when it worked... and worked properly!

I figured the graphics card my grandson gave me was broken when I couldn't get it work on my computer. It turns out that I just didn't have the right driver. ParetoLogic FileCure got it workin.

Hello FileCure folks:
I can't thank you enough for this great product. I just bought a new Vista machine and had been having all kinds of problems. First it was my screen and once I got that fixed it was the printer . Finally, my son suggested I try your product. It worked great and continues to keep my computer working. Thanks you.

I hate paying a lot of money for anything. That's why I buy mostly used computer equipment. Last week I thought I got taken when I bought a scanner. It just would not work. ParetoLogic Driver Cure got it working. With the updates, it makes sure my stuff will keep working and that I don't have to pay more money.

I work at a school so my mom thinks I am some kind of computer whiz. I have wasted so much time trying to get her stuff to work. Our IT guy suggested I try ParetoLogic FileCure. It has been a godsend and has saved me a lot of wasted hours. My mom and I can't thank you enough.

My wife bought me a new Vista system, and ever since I have had problems with some of my hardware. I saw FileCure, and decided to give it a shot. Ever since, the Vista and my hardware have been working great. Thanks!

I upgraded my system to Vista, and my printer started to act funny. No error messages, but it just wasn't working quite right. I read that drivers could sometimes be the problem. I looked online and saw FileCure. After downloading FileCure, my printer works great. You guys rock!

There are a huge number of media player programs that are compatible with .srt files. VLC is a popular one, and is available for all three major operating systems; Microsoft Windows, Linux, and Mac OS X. It can be downloaded from the VideoLan software website for free and contains all the decoders necessary to play every commonly used digital media format, audio and video (and there are lots). If you're using Windows and have the most up to date version of Windows Media Player, it will be compatible with .srt files as well, which can be loaded and displayed on top of any digital video file that the media player can play.

Subtitle files in this format are human readable and contain alphanumeric as well as symbolic characters for formatting. If one knows what they are looking for, subtle issues like errors in the timing of the display of subtitles can be identified, and if necessary corrected. Should one be inclined to make extensive changes to a subtitle file however, it may be worth that person's time to either purchase or download a free version of subtitle editing software that provides a more intuitive and easy to work with interface. Often subtitle files are transferred over the internet, and occasionally when downloading a file the user will experience data loss. Since these files can be viewed as mainly text in a simple text editor, it should also be easy to the slightly trained eye to recognize the corruption as unintelligible characters or blocks of missing information. Re-acquiring the file should get you a clean copy, but if it doesn't you can be reasonably certain that the damage to the file exists on the server it's located. Get the file from another source for a new copy.
There is another software package that's still offered today and as well uses the .srt file label, and that is the Skymap software. It is closed source and the full version is not available for free. The last update to their products page was in 2006. In this case the .srt file is used to holding data referencing different stars and other planetary or astronomical objects. There are other, more recently maintained sky charting and mapping software that can be downloaded for no cost at all, and boast more features as well. Because of this, it is unlikely that an .srt file you unexpectedly come across will correspond to this program.
Another, less common use for this file extension is as the label for a certain line of Siemens mobile phone sounds, which are stored locally on the phone itself. If a user wanted to transfer ring tone or message alert files to or from their phone with the appropriate mobile to computer cable, they would be dealing with .srt files. A listing of the phones which use this format can be found on the Siemens website. Not all of the phones that use this format are able to physically connect to and share data with a personal computer simply because they lack the port.
There are a few other software packages that are reported as using this extension for identifying their files, but they are either old and unmaintained, aimed at corporate markets, or have such a small user base that there is not enough information on them to provide the reader with an accurate description of the purpose of the file in regards to how it is used by its parent program.
